Updates

Hello everyone...I need to keep on top of the blog, so here's what's been happening since I put up the new pictures: We have a pregnant female, Marceline, who is due any day now. Someone is interested in adopting two females for Christmas, but obviously, we will not know the sexes of the babies until they're a couple weeks old. Pascal and Kisses' adoption is pending, which leaves their dad, Sigmund. He is the black and white crested (more white than black), and he will still be available for adoption. We just had two males returned; they were adopted out as babies a year and a half ago. Angus is a brown and white silkie; his brother Moo Moo is a black and white Peruvian. They MUST be adopted together. They are really beautiful, but both have long hair that will require regular grooming. I have had to turn a lot of people away in the last couple weeks, and there are a LOT of guinea pigs on Craigslist right now. Normally I would try to contact some of the owners, but right now I cannot take on any more. If you are a Time Warner customer and get YNN on Demand, check out Pet Pointers with Lisa Chelenza. She came out to the farm to film a segment on us, which is full of useful information about guinea pigs.

WE ARE BACK!

I must apologize for the VERY long absence from this blog.  We have a Facebook page that has taken off astronomically, and I didn't realize until now that I have not updated this page in six months, which is unacceptable.

This has been a very busy year, mostly with taking in guinea pigs as opposed to adopting them out.  We've lost a few of our older ones and welcomed some new babies...in fact, we have a pregnant female who is due any day now.  We are also welcoming Lisa Chelenza from YNN news, who is doing a segment for Pet Pointers with us this Wednesday (not sure when it will be broadcast but I will let everyone know).

I am going to put up some more pictures of adoptables and update the list...again, very sorry.  Our link will be in the news story so I want everything to be current.  Thank you all for your patience.

AVAILABLE GUINEA PIGS

Ok, no pictures right now, but we have quite a few boys for adoption:
BOXIE has been placed with Jack, but would make a good single guinea pig for someone.  He is a brown/white shorthair with pink eyes, about 1 1/2 years old.
LUCKY is a beige/brown shorthair, loves to snuggle on your shoulder.  Very outgoing personality, about 2 years old.
VEGAS AND RENO...Both shorthair; Vegas is brown/white with very dark eyes that look like he has eyeliner on.  Reno is buff with pink eyes and is a bit larger than Vegas.  Although they may not be related, they are a bonded pair and must be adopted together.  Reno is also a "chirper" which is rare amongst guinea pigs!
BERTA is also available...she was Lotus's mom and is an orange/brown shorthair, about 1 1/2 years old.
I will try to get pictures up as soon as I can...sorry!!!

ARRRRRRRGH.

I see I have not updated this since Lotus passed away two weeks ago.  We have, since then, lost four more guinea pigs, all of them older, but it is still hard to lose that many in a short period of time.  Milo, Pudding, Jillian, and Joe have all gone on to the Rainbow Bridge in the last 14 days.  That puts our current count at 18, plus one as we have a new arrival coming today.  The same thing happened with a string of deaths last year; most of the guinea pigs were elderly, not living together, and not even near each other, so there is no illness being spread.  Unfortunately, we have had some guinea pigs here for 6-7 years, and I'm sure more will be leaving us as the weeks and months pass.   :(

RIP Lotus

I took Lotus back to the vet Monday, hoping they would be able to do another procedure and she would be home by Friday. On Wednesday morning, the vet techs found she had passed away. I was amazed at all the support, concern, donations, etc. we got from both friends and complete strangers who had never met Lotus. We fought as hard as we could and did everything in our power to make her better, but in the end, her little body couldn't take anymore. I want to thank everyone for your kind words and for asking about her these last two months. She was the loudest squeaker here, and now that she's gone, the other guinea pigs seem to know and have been very quiet. :(

Lotus Not Out of the Woods

So, Lotus ended up getting spayed..her prolapse was the vagina/uterus, not her rectum as I had originally thought. We had hoped the spay would put an end to all her problems, but just two days later, I found she had prolapsed AGAIN, so we went back to the vet on Saturday. We are now trying Prep H as she seems to have some type of chronic inflammation similar to irritable bowel syndrome. We are keeping her clean with short baths, putting the cream on her twice a day, and keeping her fleece bedding VERY clean.
Most likely tomorrow we will be getting a 6-7 year old male guinea pig named Zach whose family is moving to a place that does not accept pets. Obviously, that is pretty old for a guinea pig, so I offered to take him and give him a permanent home here, as he is too old to adopt back out.
Again, I apologize for being behind and letting the Facebook page eat up more of my time than I had planned. I just wanted to let everyone know what's happening with Lotus..and as much as I had hoped she would be adoptable someday, I have a feeling she will need to stay with us to continue receiving the care she needs.

March Update

Hopefully, Lotus will be home in the next day or two...her rectum prolapsed again today, so they are trying to fix it. Her bill has been covered and I want to thank EVERYONE who sent us donations...most people wouldn't even care about a sick guinea pig and I am so very grateful I have a handful of followers who do!!!
Noodles has gotten FAT...he is available for experienced guinea pig owners, preferably with no small children as he does tend to bite without provocation.
Blossom has been moved into the largest cage with four other females, and is getting along well with them despite some initial "fussing." Blossom's dad, Turbo, has been placed with Buttons, who lost his cagemate a few months ago and seemed to miss having a friend. They are also getting along well and Buttons seems much happier!

Maya and Pickles ADOPTED

Again, I am woefully behind in the blog, as I spend more time on Facebook..but wanted to let everyone know that Maya and Pickles got adopted last night. Right now, our only young, available guinea pig is Noodles, but he is a chronic biter and I'm afraid he may end up staying with us permanently.

200 Guinea Pigs!

We have officially reached 200 guinea pigs in almost 9 years with the arrival of Pickles two days ago. I will have pictures of him soon!
I also went through our adoptions and saw that we adopted out 38 guinea pigs in 2011 and took in 42. We lost a dozen in 2011 to old age or severe illness. Right now we have 21 here in our home, and we look forward to helping find great homes for many more guinea pigs in the years to come!

Ok, my phone number is functional again..fortunately no one called me during the downtime! It's 315-532-2434 still and I have a brand-new Samsung Stratosphere that I'm still trying to figure out, so bear with me!

Cell Phone Died

*sigh* My Blackberry died a couple days ago, so if anyone needs to get a hold of me, please call my husband's phone at 315-530-7308. Hopefully he will do a good job of taking messages for me in the meantime, if anyone calls. I don't post my home number because it is unlisted. Sorry for any inconvenience! I will let everyone know when I get a new phone; should be the same number.
